O Nata Lux: A Voyage of Light

Our December concert will be an uplifting program juxtaposing Renaissance- and Romantic-era classics with works from diverse living composers including Mark A. Miller, Marques L. A. Garrett, Gwyneth Walker, Eslon Hindundu, and Tracy Wong. This program tackles themes of social justice through lenses of light, exploration, and belonging: songs such as Wong’s “I Lift My Lamp”, a choral setting of Emma Lazarus’ poem “The New Colossus” that is best known for being mounted on the Statue of Liberty, and Garrett’s “My Heart Be Brave”, a poignant entreaty to continue striving for justice in the face of discrimination, invite audiences to bring love and light into their hearts and their communities as the darkness of social injustice encroaches upon us.

Homeward Bound: Choral Music of the Centuries

In May, we will celebrate GVCS’ 50th anniversary with a program titled “Homeward Bound: Choral Music of the Centuries,” a curation of GVCS’ most popular past repertoire. Featuring a diverse array of works ranging from canonical to contemporary and sacred to secular, this program will highlight GVCS’ signature sound while tangibly demonstrating our commitment to uplifting diverse and living voices in our music. We will also reprise “Sotto cieli morbidi”, a work commissioned in 2023-24 from emerging female Black composer Kenedea Lea that leverages a lush tapestry of dissonant chords to evoke themes of fantasy, adventure, and the complexity of male friendship.
